PU teachers burn effigy of unlawfully appointed interim VC

Dr. Mujahid KamranLahore: Punjab University teachers burnt the effigy of unlawfully appointed interim Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran outside Punjab Assembly on the Mall on Wednesday.

PU teachers have established their hunger camp on the Mall for last three days. Protesting teachers and employees of the university had carried the placards requesting Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to look into the matter and appoint the senior most professors as acting VC in accordance with the rules and regulations. They shouted slogans against the unlawfully appointed interim VC.

The teachers who have launched Save PU Movement said, “We are not out for pay raise or any other perks or facilities. We have PhD professors and the most qualified teachers with us. It is extreme helplessness when university teachers come on the roads. We have taken to roads to protect our prestigious institute from becoming a laughing stock. There is extreme unrest among the teachers on the unlawful appointment of Mujahid Kamran as interim VC. We want him removed from the office and the senior most professor at the varsity should be appointed as acting VC in accordance with the University Act,” the added.

Earlier, PU teachers also raised slogans against unlawful appointment of VC in a rally taken out by Academic Staff Association (ASA) in new campus. “I participated in the rally and recorded my protest against the unlawful appointment of the VC. All the employees were asked to ensure their participation in the rally through a circular issued in the name of security meeting,” said Khujista Rehan, Lecturer at PU Law College.

“We will continue our struggle for the restoration of our institutes’ prestige. We are out on roads to protect our university and will go back when the decision is taken to appointment a lawful VC on merit at the university,” said Samee Uzair, Assistant Professor of the Law College.

PU Syndicate member Javed Sami, Shumaila Gull, Law College faculty member Samee Uzair, Dr Shahbaz Cheema, former member Syndicate Dr Ismatuallah , Dr. Naveed Ahmed, Madam Khujista Rehan, Dr. Shahid Ghazi, Dr Ehsan Sharif participated along with their colleagues at the protest and hunger strike camp.
