Lahore: The elections of Old Ravians Union (ORU) will be held on November 25 this year to elect the new president and other members of its Executive Committee. It was decided at the annual meeting of ORU executive committee chaired by eminent nuclear scientist and ORU outgoing President Dr Samar Mubarikmand at Government College University Lahore. ORU Honorary Secretary Dr Khalid Manzoor and youngest member of ORU Executive Committee Taha Sadaqat were also present. The union executive committee also met with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman who assured them his all-out support and maximum facilities from GCU to hold the union elections.
The union also formed an election committee comprising District and Session Judge Tahir Pervaiz and Advocate Supreme Court Javiad Altaf to ensure free and fair elections. The election committee will soon announce the schedule for submission of nomination papers. This year, the elections will be held for 13 posts including president, vice president (male), vice president (female), secretary and treasurer.
Addressing the ORU annual meeting, Dr Samar Mubarikmand said old student unions should not only be meant for holding get-togethers and culture events, but rather they had a bigger to play which was providing the alumni a platform through which they can contribute towards general development of their alma mater and help its deserving students in completing their education. He acknowledged and appreciated the services of Dr Khalid Manzoor for the union. The union executive committee also approved the annual audit report of the union.
ORU Honorary Secretary Dr Khalid Manzoor Butt said ORU elections was one of the biggest festival of the Old Ravians, adding said GCU alumni come from all over the country to cast their vote at the elections. He said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa were also members of the Old Ravians Union. It is pertinent to mention here that elections of the Old Ravians Union are held after every two years.
