Lahore : It was the quarter final day at the Hockey World League Semifinal Round, also the qualifiers for the Hockey World Cup 2018, at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
All the four winners: Argentina, Malaysia, Netherlands and England have now booked their tickets for the 2018 World Cup in Bhubaneswar, India.
Pakistan after losing to Argentina would face India, who were surprisingly beaten by Malaysia, in the 5-8 position playoffs on Saturday. The winner of that game would play the 5-6 position match with the loser to figure in the 7-8 place game. India had a big 7-1 victory over their neighbours in the pool game.
QUARTER FINALS:
Argentina beat Pakistan 3-1
World No 1 Argentina had a comfortable win over the 13th ranked Pakistan whose goal keeper Amjad Ali
gave a splendid display otherwise the winning margin could have been higher.
Malaysia upset India 3-2
14th ranked Malaysia provided the most shocking result of the quarter finals.
It was their penalty corner prowess which proved decisive.
They rattled the 6th ranked opponents with two PC conversions within the first 20 minutes.
Indians came back strongly. Ramandeep Singh had a brilliant brace; first a field goal and then through a PC.
It was 2-2 after 26 minutes.
In the 48th minute, the Malaysians again went ahead through a PC strike.
India desperately looked for an equaliser. They had a number of chances including one in the last seconds but the equaliser eluded them.
Netherlands outplay Canada 7-0
In the most one sided game, the Netherlands pulverised the North Americans.
Canadians fought well initially with the first goal arriving in the 25th minute. Thereafter, the goals arrived at regular intervals.
England came from behind to down Canada 4-2
When Canada surged to a two nil lead after 12 minutes, another upset seemed to be on the cards.
However, England rallied magnificently. Just one minute later, they had reduced the margin. The equaliser arrived in the 38th minute. Buoyed up by a good home crowd, England continued with their entertaining attacking game displayed throughout the tournament. Dominating for long periods, their 4-2 win didnt surprise any.
Earlier, South Korea defeated Scotland 6-3 to finish 9th in the 10 team event.
