UBG demands introduction of quality petrol

euro-standard-petrolLahore : The United Business Group demanded immediate introduction of Euro standard petrol across the country which will help masses save billions in repair costs.

Pakistan is using dirtiest petrol called RON (Research Octane Number) 87 which is used by Somalia only in rest of the world, said Secretary General of UBG Zubair Tufail.

He said that the difference of price between RON 87 and quality petrol is less than three rupees per litre but it is not being imported, petroleum minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to introduce quality fuel to replace substandard fuel being used since decades.

Quality petrol RON 92 and RON 94 etc. is not only environment friendly but also save repair costs as the consumption on petrol in country is up to 17,000 tonnes per day in which over fifty percent is consumed by motorcyclists.

He noted that continued import of substandard fuel has pushed away international suppliers from Pakistani market leaving government depended on few suppliers with no competition.

Oil industry should invest in technology up-gradation, storage enhancement and import quality fuel to save their maintenance cost.

He informed that some stakeholders want government to allow petrol sale of three different qualities with 87, 92 and 95 RON with price differential to allow various consumer groups to have a choice according to their purchasing power.

However, experts say that as it can lead to blending and adulteration in the market which will go against the interests of masses. Higher the RON, better the quality and engine performance and cleaner environment, said Tufail.
