Benish Nawaz wins the title of Best Female Athlete of GCU

Lahore: The departments of Economics and Physical Education lifted the prestigious team trophies in boys and girls categories respectively at the closing day of the 116th Annual Sports of the Government College University Lahore.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan was the Chief Guest at the prize distribution ceremony at the university’s Oval Ground while Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah was also present. Benish Nawaz of Physical Education Department won the title of Best Female Athlete of GCU for her extraordinary performance in different sports competitions. Subhan Masood of Economics Department was declared the Best Male Athlete.

The closing was marked by colorful Gymkhana events including Girls Chatti Race, Cricket Ball Throw, Pillow Fighting, Staff Children Race, Wheel Barrow Race, Musical Chair and Old Ravians Handicap Race. The Education Minister and Vice Chancellor also took part in the tug-of-war against the Old Ravians as a message to promote the culture of sports among students and faculty members.

In his address, Rana Mashood on the behalf of the Punjab government announced establishing a state-of-the-art Gymnasium and swimming pool at GCU Cricket Ground. He also said GCU had produced not only scientists, bureaucrats, politicians but also a lot of world class athletes and all national teams of Pakistan always had representation of GCU.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah and GCU Director Sports Khadim Ali Khan, in their addresses, congratulated the winning teams, saying that promotion of sports ultimately curbed the inclination of youth towards negative activities and deterred them from getting swept off their feet by retrogressive forces. “Rather than involving themselves in unfruitful and negative activities, students should actively engage themselves in sports,” the Vice Chancellor said.

Prof Shah believed that it’s sports and co-curricular where the real character-building of students took place.

Earlier, in the competitions, Farzana Ashraf won Chatti Race and Cricket Ball Throw, while Nadia Rohi was triumphant in the Musical Chair. Muhammad Ghor won the Obstacle Race, the most difficult competition of the day. Rashid Hafeez crossed the finish line fist in Sack Race.
