Islamabad Metro service is better than London Metro service: Lt Gen (retd) Ayaz Ahmed

metro-bus-moving-on-its-track-in-rawalpindi-Lt Gen (retd) Ayaz Ahmed Maiden Metro TripRawalpindi : Yesterday my wife and I decided to travel Islamabad on the Metro. So off we went on our ‘date’ after fifty years of marriage!

We reached the bus terminal at Sadder by taxi. (my wife wanted a totally tension free day – so no driving!). We reached the terminal with a wee bit of a trepidation as we had read about the system, heard about it on TV. They were all highly negative. But we had also heard from our friends who had travelled, and they were all praise, generally: Hence our anxiety.

The Terminal was neat, clean and well organized. The staff were very helpful and cooperative. The staff were dressed in impressive uniforms. The ticket counter was well organized and quite efficient, and we were guided to the station for boarding. Without undue wait we got the bus and seats. It was a pleasure to feel the ambience. Everything was nicely laid out with sensible ergonomics. All necessary information was available on the walls of the bus. The ride was smooth and comfortable. We travelled all the way to Centaurus ; a one hour’s drive. The route provided a totally new view of Rawalpindi which I had not seen, much less imagined. The recorded voice kept us informed continuously as to our whereabouts and the coming stop. Given the congenial atmosphere, even the passengers were behaving like civilized humans, and because of our age, seats were voluntarily vacated and offered to us. We were pleasantly surprised: this too was Pakistan. I have travelled a good deal all over the world. I can safely say that the system in cleanliness and décor and convenience, it was better than the London Metro service! In fact my wife commented thus first, and she is no easy one to please!

And the round luxury trip cost us only Rs 40/ each, for a day trip well spent.

We all crib and complain: it’s our national fixation. Because of the media, we too were abhorred at this “monstrosity” and cynical. I am no fan of the Sharif Brothers, but, criticism aside, I think it’s a useful service, and looks grand too. Well Done Sharif brothers. This service I hope, is here to stay and serve the awaam.

I would recommend all critics to use it first. The regular commuters we talked to were very happy indeed. You will be too.

  1. I am not surprised by the comments posted by Mr. Ayaz.
I need answer of only one thing. When your home is in miserable condition and you don’t have a dried bread to feed your family and you borrow money like a begger and after you are given the money on very high interest rates, you go and buy an expensive cake from rahat bakery and then say, ” yummy, the cake is so delicious”.

Please don’t forget that for every passenger who rides on metro, govt. Of Pakistan bears loss. This is the world’s most expensive project which can not meet its cost after 100 years.

I wish you would have been to London and explored their transport system.

    Eyes Wide Shut.
