Sports Board Punjab will organize four sports events on Independence Day

Lahore: Sports Board Punjab (SBP) will organize four sports events on Independence Day at different venues of the city on August 14, 2015.

In the first event, the women teams of Sports Board Punjab and Commissioner XI will play a hockey match at National Hockey Stadium at 2.00pm followed by a volleyball match between SBP and Commissioner XI men’s teams at Punjab Stadium at 3.00pm.

Then at 3.30pm, a male and female pentathlon competition will be organized between SBP and DCO XI at Punjab Stadium. Railway Stadium will host the last event of the day at 5.00pm when SBP and DCO XI male and female weightlifters will be in action.

Meanwhile, Sports Board Punjab (SBP) XI defeated Commissioner XI by 4-2 in an exhibition Independence Day hockey match at National Hockey Stadium on Thursday.

Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar was the chief guest of the match. President Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari, Olympians Kh Junaid, Khalid Bashir, Qasim Khan were also present on this occasion. Faizan struck two goals while Yasir and Naved Alam netted one goal each for the winning team. Abid and Rizwan reduced the defeat margin for losing team with one goal each.

DG SBP Usman Anwar while talking to media said that Punjab govt was doing whole-hearted efforts for the promotion of hockey in Pakistan. “Hockey is our national game and we are quite committed to revive it in our country,” he added. He urged the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to make necessary reforms for the better future of hockey in Pakistan. “Merit must be followed in all selections and appoints in the governing body of Pakistan hockey,” he opined.

Sports Board Punjab also organized Independence Day Swimming Gala at Samanabad Sports Complex Swimming Pool. Director Sports SBP Hafeez Bhatti supervised all the proceedings in swimming gala.

The Super Boy contest was won by Yahya while under-8 and under-10 competitions were clinched by Salman Babar and Mekal Faisal Ejaz respectively. Mustafa Ibrahim, Rebal Ishfaq and Hassan Akhtar emerged winners in U-12, U-14 and U-16 competitions respectively.

Earlier, Chief Minister XI and Showbiz XI also played a friendly cricket match at Ittefaq Cricket Ground to mark the Independence Day. Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar was the guest of honour on this occasion. Pakistan ODI skipper Azhar Ali, LCCA President Kh Nadeem Ahmed and film star Shan were also present on this occasion.
