Lahore: Patron-in-chief, Pakistan Hindu Council and Member National Assembly, Dr. Ramesh Kumar Vankwani has strongly opposed any kind of attempt to hold indirect elections for reserved seats in the local government, provincial and parliamentary elections, demanding that the reserved quota seats of district councils, municipal corporations and municipal committees must be filled through the direct method of dual vote.
Talking to the media, outside Parliament House on Tuesday, he said that the indirect selection, in the name of election, of representatives posing from women and marginalized communities, must be discouraged because it deprives the people of their democratic rights to elect their genuine representatives.
He further said that his recommendations for the allocation of division wise seats for minority representatives and grant of dual vote to them, are already presented to the Electoral Reform Committee.
“Each Province shall, by law, establish a local government system and devolve political, administrative and financial responsibility and authority to the elected representatives of the local governments.” Dr. Ramesh Vankwani quoted the Article 140-A of the Local Government, while emphasizing that indirect election on the bases of personal liking and disliking of winning political parties, is not only violation of the constitution but also opens doors of corruption, nepotism and bribery at a larger scale.
