Lahore: Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed was unanimously re-elected as Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee at a meeting of members of the Committee held at Parliament House today. His name was proposed by Senator Col. (R) Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi of MQM and seconded by Senator Sehar Kamran of PPP-P, Senator Brig. (R) John Kenneth Williams of PTI and Senator Hidayatullah from FATA. Other members who were present included Senator Attaur Rehman of JUI-F, Senator Javed Abbasi of PML-N, Senator Lt. Gen. (R) Abdul Qayuum of PML-N.
Soon after his re-election, the members appreciated the performance of the Senate Defence Committee under the leadership of Senator Mushahid Hussain during 2012-2015 and they hope that the Senate Defence Committee will continue to be one of the most important and dynamic committees of the Parliament, especially such unique initiatives as Public Hearings, Policy Seminars and regular reports.
Thanking the members for reposing confidence in him, Senator Mushahid Hussain said that it was a great honour to be leading such an important committee of the parliament entrusted with defence and national security on this critical juncture of Pakistan’s history. He said that the Defence Committee will continue to serve and promote harmony between the armed forces and the political forces represented in the parliament of Pakistan as this was the need of the hour. He said that the Senate Defence Committee takes great pride in the real sacrifices and contribution of the valiant armed forces of Pakistan who are leading from the front in the war on terror and fight for the future of Pakistan.
The meeting also offered Fateha for the victims of carnage in Karachi and unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by Senator Sehar Kamran condemning the act of terrorism in Karachi and praised the role of the Pakistan armed forces in the fight against terrorism.
Senator Mushahid Hussain also appreciated the role of Secretary of the Committee, Dr. Syed Pervaiz Abbas, Mr. Riaz Ahmad Khan, Director Staff of the Committee and his Assistant, Mr. Taufiq Ahmed in providing excellent support and professionalism in the successful working of the Senate Defence Committee which he said will continue with renewed vigour and strength in the future. It was also decided to have the meeting of the Senate Defence Committee in the last week of May 2015 to devise a Work Plan for the Senate Defence Committee which would be presented to the members for their approval at that meeting.
