Lahore: An awareness walk was held on the campus of the Government College University, Lahore under auspices of its Blood Donation Society (BDS) to mark the International Thalassemia Day. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman led the walk, while eminent journalist Sohail Warriach, Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh, Director Intermediate Studies Dr Saqib Iqbal, BDS Advisor Dr Babar Naseem Aasi and a large number of faculty members and students participated in the awareness walk. The students carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans regarding thalassemia awareness.
Vice Chancellor Prof Rahman called upon students to take responsibility to go door-to-door and aware every member of society about Thalassemia. He said that social awareness was mandatory to defeat Thalassemia before adopting practical and legal ways to defeat the diseases. The Vice Chancellor said that prevention was better than cure, so every member of the society must be screened by a simple blood test before marriage.
