Lahore: Senator Mushahid Hussain termed it as ‘heartening’ that private sector initiatives like Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital were serving suffering humanity, acknowledging its founder, the late Lt Gen Jehandad Khan as a ‘role model’ worthy of emulation, who put collective interests of society above any personal interest.
Speaking as Guest of Honour at the 1st Al-Shifa Annual Day, Senator Mushahid Hussain also talked of his old association with the Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital where he performed voluntary services, said that Lt Gen Jehandad Khan had optimism, faith in the future and believed in team-work, all qualities which led him to build such an institution after retirement. He praised the spirit of volunteerism and said that ‘we should learn from Gen Jehandad who always believed in giving back to society, rather than asking for more’.Lt Gen (R) Jahandad Khan had started Al-Shifa Trust in a humble way and made it into a large organization devoting all his energies towards this brainchild till the last day of his life, the Senator acknowledged. On the occasion, Senator Mushahid quoted excerpts from his books as well. The retired General himself described the relentless and selfless strories related to his struggle for this noble cause in his book “Beacon of Light”. His other books include ‘Pakistan: Leadership Challenges’, ‘Leadership Crisis in Pakistan’ and ‘Depart with Smile’.
Senator Mushahid also lauded the positive contributions of current President of Al Shifa, Lt Gen (R) Hamid Javed as a ‘worthy successor of Gen Jehandad who, like his predecessor, is also a workaholic’.
The event was attended by large number of doctors, donors, diplomats, medical students and humanitarians.
