GCU Book Fair to open on October 27

GCULahore: The Government College University Lahore is organizing three­ day Grand Book Fair at the historical GCU Oval Ground from Monday, October 27 to Wednesday, October 29, 2014 to retain the interest of youth in book reading in the cyber age. “About 45 national international publishers would set up their stalls at the Book Fair and offer up to 50 percent discount on their books,” said GCU Chief Librarian Abdul Waheed in a press statement issued here on Saturday.

He said that the Book Fair, being organized on the special directions of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq ­ur­ Rahman, would over 0.3 million books under one ­roof with an aim to rejuvenate students’ love for books.

The inaugural ceremony of the Book Fair would be held at on October 27 while the closing ceremony and certificates awarding ceremony would be organized on October 29 at the GCU Bukhari Auditorium. A large number eminent writers, poets and authors are also invited to the Book Fair.

Prof Dr Muhammad Rahman called upon the publishers participating in the university’s Grand Book Fair to offer maximum discounts to students on books to retain the interest of youth in book reading in the cyber age.

The Vice Chancellor said information technology can’t replace books. He said books had their own significance even in the age of information and communication technologies. He said books left ever lasting impressions on the minds of the readers. “The vision and knowledge you get by reading books; you can never have it by just reading reviews and summaries on the internet,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor called upon the publishers to give maximum discounts keeping in view that those who are buying are “students.” He hoped that GCU Book Fair would flourish reading culture among the youth. Prof Rahman also directed the management of the Book Fair to provide maximum facilities to the guests, teachers and students attending in the Book Fair and publishers.
