Lahore: The Dramatics Club of Government College University, Lahore (GCUDC) Tuesday evening staged a special edition of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” at the Cultural Evening hosted by the university in the honour of foreign educationists of top universities of the world who came to Pakistan to attend the International Conference on ‘South Asia Policy Dialogue on Higher Education and Knowledge Parks’.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said GC Dramatics Club started its journey in 1890 by staging selections from Shakespeare. “In a way, on this historic
occasion, the GCDC has come full circle,” he added.
The GCU Vice Chancellor also commended the young students who make up the cast of Macbeth. “I understand that this time the GCDC is using new talent. These girls have never acted before, but their voices, gestures, and powerful acting do not betray a single rookie strain. I wish them success on their performance.” he added.
He expressed gratitude that Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, an eminent Old Ravian, had selected his alma mater for hosting cultural evening in the honor of foreign delgates.
Talking about the play, GCUDC Advisor Sameer Ahmed said that GCUDC’s Macbeth was a collage of important scenes from Shakespeare’s text that retains the original dialogue and plotline, but takes the
liberty of experimenting with the presentation. He said in some scenes, they brought the interpretation into the play, adding that they also played with the chronology by reordering the dialogue and enactment.
The role of Macbeth was portrayed convincingly by Komal Nazir. Hooria Ahmed managed to enthrall with her nuanced portrayal of Lady Macbeth and the Second Witch. Sameen Mashkoor and Rukhsar Baig were entertaining as the First and Third Witch respectively. Banquo was played ably by Farwa Sheikh. The chorus consisted of Nawal Islam and Nafisa Mustafa. Music was handled by Muzamil Shabbir. Zohaib Zafar, president GCDC, managed lights and production. The production team consisted of Omar Shaheedi, Zia Ahmed, and Osman Aziz. Costumes and props were taken care of by Ms. Fatima Batool.
A large number of vice chancellors also witnessed the play.
