Lahore: Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee, has said that Cuba has one of the best medical systems in the world and it is a matter of pride that the first batch of 300 Cuban-trained doctors, has returned back to Pakistan upon completion of their seven-year education. He added that 145 students out of these 300 students bagged gold medals by getting 99.2 % marks in their exams.
He was addressing the lunch reception hosted by the Deputy Chairman Senate, Senator Sabir Ali Baloch in honor of 1st batch of Pakistani medical doctors graduated from Cuba, here at Parliament House on Monday.
Cuban Ambassador, H.E. Jesus Zenen Concepcion was also present on the occasion.
Senator Mushahid, in his speech, also thanked the Cuban Government for sending medical relief team to help people in earthquake affected areas in 2005, adding the Cuban government’s scholarship program on merit-basis for Pakistani medical students was a very positive initiative.
He said Cuba has inspired the Third World with leadership that showed courage in preserving independence of their small country, despite foreign pressures, adding today Cuba has the best medical system in the Third World.
Senator Sabir Ali Baloch, while urging the fresh graduates to serve Pakistan with zeal and devotion, pointed out that the fresh graduate from Cuba were facing some problems for practice as a doctor in Pakistan, and hoped that they would go to far-flung corners of Balochistan to serve the people.
The Pakistani doctors acclaimed Cuban Medical science as extraordinary in the world due to unique teaching system, methodology of practicing preventive medicine, planning for eradicating many of severe infectious diseases, advancement in biotechnology and vaccination, its free state wide distribution of medical services, and the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of oncology. They particularly thanked Senator Sabir Ali Baloch for providing a platform for voicing their genuine demands.
The Cuban Ambassador termed the event as a special day in Pakistan-Cuba friendship. He felicitated the fresh graduates and hoped that they would invest their energies in improving the health sector in Pakistan.
