Lahore: Pakistan’s largest three-day book fair organized by Punjab University administration concluded here on Saturday at New Campus while the organizers said that over 78 thousand books were sold in two days i.e. Thursday and Friday.
Thousands of people from all walks of life, especially a large number of families, thronged PU book fair and purchased books of their interest from bookstalls. In the last hours, the book sellers started to provide more than 50 percent discount on books because of which the sale of books gained an extra-ordinary momentum.
On the third day, Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran, renowned columnist Atta-ul-Haq Qasmi, Senior journalist Sohail Warraich, internationally acknowledged writer Intzar Hussain, Hafeez-ullah Niazi, renowned columnist Dr Ajmal Niazi, Sohail Ahmed Azizi and renowned journalists and writers also visited the book fair.
Talking to media, the federal minister said that the knowledge was incomplete without books. He said that media should play role to create awareness among youth regarding importance of books and the new generation could be guided towards books through such book fairs. He said that he liked two things i.e. books and trees. He congratulated Dr Mujahid Kamran on continuously organizing the book fair thus providing an opportunity to book lovers to purchase books on low rates.
Dr Mujahid Kamran said that the purpose of PU book fair was to provide all kinds of books under one roof on reduced prices.
Intizar Hussain said that book fairs played important role in promotion of literary and co-curricular books and through the courtesy of such book fair, art and literature could be promoted in society.
Renowned columnist Atta ul Haq Qasmi said that we were just pessimist that the new generation was not taking interest in book fair but today’s great rush of people was itself a witness to the fact that the new generation was still connected to the books.
Senior journalist Sohail Warraich said that man was not incomplete without books and books refine human’s personality. He said that the importance of books was still intact in this age of IT and he used to take print out of reading material as touching books and papers had its own charm. He said that Hafeez ullah Niazi said that collectively our society was far away from the books and such book fairs must be organized to strengthen friendship with the books. He said that people must read a book while they were traveling.
Sohail Ahmed Azizi said that book was as much important as the heart was in the body. He said that if one does not take care of his heart, one could not survive.
Dr Ajmal Niazi said that he liked two things, one was book and the second was bookish faces. He said that we must revive book reading culture in our society as the importance of books could not be minimized in any age.
During the visit to book fair, Baloch students presented bouquet to Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran and wore traditional Baloch turban on his head.
