Old woman allegedly died during police raid

Lahore: On Friday, Lahore High Court Complaint Cell took notice of a press report on administrative side that a 65-year-old woman allegedly died during police raid.CCPO Ch Shafiq 4-4-14 CCPO Lahore 4-4-14

The Cell has directed the District & Sessions Judge, Sheikhupura to look into the matter and submit a detailed report regarding steps taken by police along with his own comments within a week.

According to details, a Bhiki police party consisting of an ASI, Abdul Salam Dogar and three constables, along with two complainants Ghulam Rasool and Hakim Bashir, raided a house owned by Sheikh Riaz Ahmad in Capri Park area to arrest him in connection with a monetary dispute.

As the police entered the house, Riaz’s elderly mother Maqbool Bibi asked them the reason for trespass. The police told her that her son was wanted in a case. The elderly woman offered resistance. During the ensuing scuffle, the ASI pushed the woman whose head struck against an electric pole resulting in her instant death. Sensing the seriousness of situation, the police party fled from the scene.

Later, the residents of Capri Park led by relatives of the deceased woman gathered on Lahore-Sargodha-Faisalabad road and blocked it for traffic. The protest continued for about seven hours. The protesters finally dispersed on the assurance of police officials that those responsible for the woman’s death would be booked.

The City A Division police, on the direction of district police officer, got registered a case under sections 302, 148, 149 of the PPC against ASI Islam Dogar, three constables and two complainants.
