Swine flu threat rise in Punjab

Khawaja Salman RafiqueLahore:  A high level meeting of Health Department was held here today under the Chairmanship of Advisor to Chief Minister on Health, Kh. Salman Rafique to review the situation in the wake of detection of several cases of swine flu at Nishtar Hospital Multan.

Secretary Health Babar Hayat Tarar, Additional Secretary Health Technical Dr. Anwar Janjua, Director General Health Punjab Dr. Zahid Pervaiz, Dean Institute of Public Health Prof. Moaaz Ahmed and prominent epidemiologists were present.

On the instructions of Kh. Salman Rafique, a 5-member team of medical experts of IPH was immediately sent to Multan which included two specialists Dr. Saeeda and Dr. Aamir as well as lap technicians. Prof. Moaaz Ahmed informed that besides conducting epidemiological survey of the area, samples will also be collected from the houses of the people.

Kh. Salman Rafique directed the team to complete its survey as soon as possible and submit its report.

Secretary Health informed that all public sector hospitals have been put on high alert and directed to take preventive measures with regard to swine flu. Director General Health Punjab Dr. Zahid Pervaiz informed that swine flu is a curable disease and antiviral medicines are available in abundance.

Dean IPH Prof. Moaaz Ahmed informed that swine flu is a viral disease and it spreads through droplets of saliva during breathing process. He said that people should adopt preventive measures and keep their nose and mouth covered. He said that doctors and nurses treating the patients should use protection kits. He said that vaccine against swine flu is not available and treatment is symptomatic.

Kh. Salman Rafique directed DG Health to pay special attention to the treatment of swine flu patients and take effective measures for the control of the disease.

Meanwhile,Kh. Salman Rafique handed over a cheque for Rs.2 lakh on behalf of Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to Habib Ullah, father of 11 years old cardiac patient Afsana of Sukkhar Sindh, admitted in Punjab Institute of Cardiology here today
