Lahore: Annual sports gala begins today at Queen Mary College Lahore in connection with its 105th Founder’s Day celebrations. Mrs. Farhat Mashhood, wife of the Punjab Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan was the chief guest on the occasion.
Principal QMC Dr. Irfana Maryam, while presenting the performance report of the college in sports, informed the parents and the chief guest that the students of this prestigious educational institution have won laurels not only in academic field but in inter collegiate sports competitions both at provincial and national level.
The chief guest Mrs. Farhat Mashhood in her presidential speech appreciated the achievements of QMC girls particularly in judo-karate, athletic, cycling, gymnastics, lawn tennis and volley ball and said, a balanced concept of mental and physical health is essential to adopt for the new generation particularly for the female students because a sound body has a sound mind. It is a pleasure to see such a beautiful and colourful day where the students have performed their mastery over games and martial arts which certainly shows their hard work, stamina, sportsman spirit and discipline which can change the society, she added.
The wife of Provincial Education Minister further said that women are 52 percent of our total population and 60 percent of the women folk consists of youth within the age of 20 to 40 years. Our female students are so talented that they occupy 70 percent seats in public sector medical colleges on purely merit basis. There is no reason that youth who constitutes 60 percent of our national population should not take us to zenith of progress and development.
She lauded the launching of six mega programmes for the welfare of youth by the Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and described the programme designed to provide subsidized financing for one hundred thousand beneficiaries, 50 percent of which will be the women. She also lauded launching of a local chapter of global project “Agents of Change” to focus on youth and emphasized the need to create such platform to groom the new generation. She termed it a good omen that ratio of female students obtaining laptops on merit basis exceeds to 60 percent of the total laptops provided to the youth of the Punjab province.
She was optimistic to hope that the girls from all educational institutions will have a massive participation in the coming youth festival in a vigorous manner. The youth festival will commence on December 16 this year. Mrs. Farhat Mashhood said, we are all women and hold an equal position in carrying-out the responsibilities of transforming this land into a legacy for coming generations.
This legacy should be free of poverty, ignorance and social evils, she concluded. Earlier, the girl students from Fatima House, Iqbal House, Haider House and Hajra House of Queen Mary College Lahore displayed incredible tricks through PT display, ring throw race, sack race and chati race besides an enthusiastic march past and band display.
The karate practitioners from QMC exhibited the martial art of self defense without any armed weapon on the occasion.
