Lahore: Provincial Minister for Irrigation, Mian Yawar Zaman has said that Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has extended unforgettable cooperation for brick lining of canals of Lower Chenab Canal System. He said that Rs. 12 billion are being spent for the rehabilitation of canals of Chiniot, Bahwalnagar and DG Khan with the cooperation of JICA.
He was addressing a training workshop of officers of Irrigation, PIDA and Agriculture Departments held with the cooperation of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at a local hotel, here today. Coordinator of workshop Takashi Fujisaki also addressed the workshop. The Minister said that Punjab government is taking all out steps for ensuring supply of water at tails and work is going on a number of projects with the cooperation of international institutions. He stressed upon the experts to provide guidance to the cultivators regarding proper utilization of canal water. He said that JICA has introduced practically the farmers of Punjab about sprinkle irrigation, drip irrigation, tunnel farming and bed and fro methods.
Mian Yawar Zaman said that holding of training programmes by international experts is a welcoming step. He said that JICA experts have informed our farmers about latest irrigation techniques for achieving bumper crops with utilization of minimum water for which we are thankful to people and government of Japan. He said that the officers benefiting from workshop should guide the cultivators through their training experience for the promotion of agriculture. While addressing the participants, the Minister said that economy of Pakistan depends upon agriculture and water is must for it. He said that on the inclusion of farmers in the management of canal system by Punjab government, international development institutions have extended cooperation for the rehabilitation of our irrigation system.
