Lahore: Punjab government has evolved a flood plan before the start of monsoon and due to threat of possible flood. District Coordination Officers of all districts have been issued instructions to carry out repair of spurs of all rivers and canals throughout the province whereas flood monitoring committees are also being constituted at tehsil level. Stones and bags of sand are also being stored at the banks of rivers and canals so that these could be used to cope any emergent situation during flood. Lahore Flood Warning Center will work round the clock from June 15. PDMA has started storing of essential items at storage and warehouses in the province for meeting any emergent situation.
These views were expressed by Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority Mujahid Sherdil while addressing the first meeting held in connection with implementation of flood plan in view of the possible flood and monsoon. Provincial Irrigation Minister Qaiser Zulfiqar Khan, Chief Secretary Punjab, Senior Member Board of Revenue, Additional Secretary Information Syed Tahir Raza Hamdani and senior officers of other departments were also present.
Mujahid Sherdil informed the meeting that PDMA has activated big boats, fiber glass boats, rubber boats, dewatering sets, generators and other machinery which will be used at the time of need. The other departments have also been directed to inform about the working condition of their machinery. He said that Flood Warning Center will immediately provide information to the people through electronic and print media about the high, medium and low flood. Mujahid Sherdil said that DCOs of the province have been directed to retrieve the areas situated at pond areas of rivers from occupants. He said that the banks of nullah Lai of Rawalpindi should also immediately be got vacated from the gypsies residing there. He disclosed that two big warehouses were being constructed at Muzaffargarh and Lahore which will soon be completed.
