Lahore: M. Salman Farooqi, Acting Wafaqi Mohtasib, has been elected as to the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) Board of Directors. The voting was conducted through secret Ballot held by the IOI’s General Secretariat in Vienna.
The International Ombudsman Institute, established in 1978, is the only global organization for the cooperation of more than 150 Ombudsman Institutions all over the world. The IOI is organized in regional Chapters in Africa, Asia, Australasia & Pacific, Europe, Caribbean & Latin America and North America.
Hundreds of ombudsmen throughout the world deal with complaints from the public regarding decisions, actions or omissions of public administration. The role of the ombudsmen is to protect the people against violation of rights, abuse of power, error, negligence, unfair decisions and maladministration and to improve public administration while making the government’s actions more open and its administrations more accountable to the public.
In Pakistan the Institution of Wafaqi Mohtasib started functioning on
8 August, 1983. The Wafaqi Mohtasib has headquarters in Islamabad and Regional Offices in Lahore, Sukkur, Quetta, Faisalabad, Multan, Dera Ismail Khan, Peshawar and Karachi.
After assuming the responsibilities of Acting Wafaqi Mohtasib Mr. Faruqui has been striving to revamp the Institution with the view to making it more responsive for timely redress of public grievances
