Lahore : Bone marrow transplant project in Children Hospital has been completed at a cost of Rs.240 million. The grant was provided by the Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif for setting up a state of the art BMT Center for the children suffering from blood cancer. Highly qualified and trained doctors, nurses and paramedics have been posted in the center. The training for super specialty to the staff was imparted in Sindh National Institute of Blood Diseases. The special team of Punjab Human Organs Transplant Authority have visited the Children Hospital and inspected the newly established BMT and expressed their satisfaction over the facility.
It was informed in a meeting chaired by Secretary Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Najam Ahmed Shah at Children Hospital. Besides, Dean Institute of Child Health and Children Hospital Prof. Dr. Masood Sadiq, Medical Director Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, Project Director Bone Marrow Transplantation Center Prof. Dr. Tahir Shamsi, Prof. Huma Arshad Cheema, Incharge BMT Center Consultant Dr. Mehvish Faizan and the doctors, nurses and paramedics who have completed the training in super specialty were also present in the meeting.
Prof. Dr. Ahsan Rathore briefed the Secretary and said that Dr. Mehvish Faizan has been appointed Incharge of BMT Center. She has got two years training in Birmingham Hospital, UK.
Prof. Rathore further informed that six doctors and six nurses were trained as master trainers in Sindh National Institute of Blood Diseases Karachi.
During last six months, these master trainers have trained more than sixty doctors, nurses and paramedics. He said that PHOTA team had visited the center and expressed their satisfaction over the arrangements, however, proper permission would be received within few days from them and hopefully the first child would be admitted in the center for bone marrow transplantation in the next week of August.
Secretary Najam Ahmed Shah asked the Dean Children Hospital Prof. Masood Sadiq to prepare feasibility report for setting up bone marrow centers in Faisalabad and Multan Children Hospitals so that maximum patients could be accommodated.
Najam Ahmed Shah appreciated the spirit of humanitarian services of doctors, nurses and paramedics posted in the BMT center and said that serving at BMT is a full time job and needs professional zeal and dedication.
He directed Medical Director to prepare a summary for creating dedicated special cadre for nurses of super specialties. Secretary Health urged that the nurses should enhance their qualification and professional skills and come forward in hospital management like other countries.
Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore informed that Children Hospital is fully implementing SOPs of infection control and during the last 6 months the hospital has totally overcome the infection control. He said that infection free environment is essential for fast healing of wounds and early recovery of patients of such complicated surgeries.
Secretary Health Najam Ahmed Shah lauded the efforts of the hospital administration for timely completion of development projects including construction of 680 beds new block, BMT center and other projects. Najam Ahmed Shah said “you are the champions of health profession”.
He also appreciated the efforts and dedicated services of Dr. Tahir Shamsi Project Director Bone Marrow Transplant Center Children Hospital for taking keen interest in completion of the center.
