Lahore : Removal of brain tumor through eye brow without doing surgery of skull of the patient has been started at Lahore General Hospital for the first time in the history of Pakistan. As many as six such operations have so far been conducted while removal of brain tumor through nose using Endoscopy technique is also in progress successfully at the hospital.
This was stated by renowned Neurosurgeon and Head of Neurosurgery Unit II of Lahore General Hospital Prof. Khalid Mahmood while talking to media in connection with World Tumor Day. He said that Pakistan is not legging behind UK, USA and other developed countries in the use of modern techniques to diagnose and operations of brain tumor.
He told that there are hundred types of brain tumors and only some develop into cancer. He said that there is acute shortage of Neurosurgeons in Pakistan and only 225 neurosurgeons are available for 200 million population of our country as compared to minimum requirement of 1000 neurosurgeons for such a huge population. He said that facility of neurosurgery is available in almost all major government hospitals of the province.
He told that chances of brain tumor are equal in male and female but the children going through any kind of radiation are more vulnerable to this disease. He said that establishment of Punjab Institute of Neurosciences is a great breakthrough for treatment of neuro diseases in Pakistan.
He said that patients of brain tumors should reach Lahore General Hospital through reference of Tehsil and District hospitals but it is possible only when experienced and expert neurosurgeons are deployed there.
