Women-on-Wheels campaign launched in Sargodha

women on wheels ceremony at SargodhaLahore : After the successful launch of the Women-on-Wheels campaign , Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit (Law & Order) in collaboration with City District Government and Traffic Police organized the Women-on-Wheels rally in Sargodha today.

The rally commemorated the training received by women of Sargodha as part of the Women-on-Wheels campaign in an attempt to empower and support women to access the public space. The rally was attended by Minister Women Development-Hameeda Waheed ud Din, Minister Population Welfare Zakia Shahnawaz Khan, Swedish Ambassador-Ingrid Johansson and Senior Member SMU Salman Sufi .

The event was held at Police Lines and attended by members of the civil society, including representatives from Punjab Commission for the Status of Women and Aurat Foundation.

Senior member SMU Salman Sufi elaborated on how the campaign was launched earlier in May and has garnered interest from many women from across socio-economic strata and professions. Around 100 women have taken the motorcycle trainings conducted by female wardens of Traffic Police Sargodha trained by Honda.

The rally comprised of 30 of these trained women taking up motorcycles on their own and driving across Police Lines in Sargodha. It was a moment of pride for the country as the Women-on-Wheels were draped in green and white dupattas to embody the spirit of Pakistan’s Defense Day.

Speaking on this occasion Salman Sufi said that Women-on-Wheels rally in Sargodha aims to empower women, bring an end to street harassment and allow women to access the public space.
