Lahore : Chief Minister Punjab’s Special Assistant and former Inspector General Police, Rana Maqbool Ahmad has said that Punjab Prosecution department’s success rate for the current calendar year is 93 percent. Out of total 37280 contested cases, 34704 were won by prosecution department and accused faced the music. From January 01 to 31st May this year, 418 accused were given Death Sentence, 459 were sentenced to Life Imprisonment, 140 accused were awarded imprisonment above 7 years while 15509 received imprisonment below seven years from the honorable courts.
Rana Maqbool Ahmad was presiding over the meeting of senior public prosecutors from Lahore, Gujranwala, Kasur and Sheikhupura here today. High profile cases and performance of Prosecution Department was discussed in the meeting.
The meeting was informed that from 1st January to 31st May this year, only 2576 cases were acquitted on merit due to different reasons. It is pertinent to mention here that the performance of prosecution department is evaluated by considering the number of contested cases in courts that are resultant as well. The cases disposed off on compromise, resiling of witness and consigned to record cannot be linked with the contested cases and prosecutors performance.
Commenting on the performance report of the prosecution department, Rana Maqbool Ahmad, congratulated the hard working prosecutors and stressed that dispensation of speedy justice to the oppressed person is a great mission. He directed the Public Prosecutors to work with utmost devotion so that rule of law and justice will be established in the society. He also said that latest gadgets are being distributed among public prosecutors along with specialized training sessions for enhancing their skills.
He said that prime minister of Pakistan has also lauded the improvement in the performance of Punjab Public Prosecution Department. He said that confidence of people upon the judicial system and law enforcement agencies is strengthened through conviction of criminals and terrorists.
