SLAB launches Quality Research Rankings of more than 200 universities

Dr Umar SaifLahore: Information Technology University (ITU) Scientometrics Lab (SLAB) has launched Quality Research Rankings of more than 200 universities and research institutions of Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference held at Arfa Software Technology Park on Wednesday, Vice Chancellor of ITU Dr. Umar Saif said that ITU Quality Research Rankings (ITU-QRR) is distinctive because it only aggregates work published in top research journals and conferences. It uses international criteria to rank Pakistani institutions in terms of real quality and impact. He further added that we are delighted to share Pakistan’s first research ranking of universities and institutions with very interesting and insightful data showing where we stand in quality research.

He said “This ranking was made without any prejudice and in accordance with the objectives set for the SLAB on the basis of the empirical data collected and analyzed. This is the first ever research ranking issued for the institutions of Pakistan. There are international academic institutions which are doing same kind of research work and issuing ranking of research institutions.”

Dr, Saif revealed that according to ITU-QRR rankings, Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad topped the overall ranking list issued by SLAB.

“The QAU is followed by COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, National University of Sciences and Technology, University of the Punjab Lahore, Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), University of the Karachi, University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, and Government College University, Lahore. The ITU-QRR also issued rankings of specialized institutions of Pakistan.

In specialized category, Agha Khan University topped followed by Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), Lahore University of Management Sciences, National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Pakistan, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, NED University of Engineering and Technology Pakistan, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, University of Engineering and Technology Taxila, NWFP Agricultural University, and University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi” he added

Dr. Saeed Ul Hassan head of ITU’s Scientometrics Lab states, “ITU Quality Research Ranking is a first step that will go a long way to start a culture of quality research in Pakistan”. It is based on international quality research publications in Pakistani institutions. He hoped that it would be helpful in promotion of research culture in Pakistan.
