Lahore: Punjab University teachers who have been protesting outside Punjab Assembly against the unlawful appointment of interim vice chancellor at Punjab University for a month announced to adjourn their protest to participate in Academic Staff Association (ASA) on Tuesday.
Teachers who launched PU Save Movement said the ASA election as to be held on March 10thand they had decided to fully participate in it. “We will do our campaign by wearing black bands on our arms. We know that the unlawful VC will do his best to pressurize teachers to support his group in the elections but we will confront them,” teachers said.
“We hope the government will remove the unlawfully appointed Mujahid Kamran but if it doesn’t we will be back on the Mall to protest from March 11,” said Samee Uzair, one of the protesting teachers.
The teachers who have launched Save PU Movement said, “We did not come out for pay raise or any other perks or facilities. We have PhD professors and the most qualified teachers with us. It is extreme helplessness when university teachers come on the roads. We have taken to roads to protect our prestigious institute from becoming a laughing stock. There is extreme unrest among the teachers on the unlawful appointment of Mujahid Kamran as interim VC. We want him removed from the office and the senior most professor at the varsity should be appointed as acting VC in accordance with the University Act,” the added.
“We will continue our struggle for the restoration of our institutes’ prestige. ASA election will prove that teachers don’t want the illegal VC at the university,” they said.
PU Syndicate member Javed Sami, Shumaila Gull, Law College faculty member Samee Uzair, Dr Shahbaz Cheema, former member Syndicate Dr Ismatuallah , Dr. Naveed Ahmed, Madam Khujista Rehan, Dr. Shahid Ghazi, Dr Ehsan Sharif participated along with their colleagues at the protest.
