Lahore: Chief Secretary Punjab Khizar Hayat Gondal has ordered that stern action be taken against owners of brick kilns involved in child labour. He also directed all commissioners to pay surprise visits to brick kilns for inspection.
He was presiding over a meeting of Steering Committee for Elimination of Child Labour at Civil Secretariat here on Tuesday.
Addressing the meeting, the Chief Secretary said that inspection of brick kilns should be continued regularly and strict action should be taken over the violation of law. All departments and relevant institutions should carry out coordinated efforts for ending child labour at brick kilns, he added.
He directed the Schools Education Department to complete enrollment campaign as early as possible. He said that effective steps are being taken to ensure complete elimination of child labour in the province.
He mentioned that the Punjab government has enhanced punishment for the persons involved in crime of child labour besides taking special measures for educating children of kiln workers. He said that no leniency would be shown towards the violators of law regarding child labour.
The meeting also reviewed progress on admissions of children of kiln workers in government schools.
