Mandi Bahauddin(Sher Gondal) : On the call of Pakistan Medical Association Mandi Bahauddin all doctors and medic staff held protest rally on Monday against failure of police in arresting murderers of Doctor Shahid Nazir. Lawyers, ex-servicemen, traders’ leaders and members of civil society joined the rally to show their solidarity with medics. Participants raised slogans against police for not tracing out murderers so far.
Addressing the rally speakers condemned police for failing to control crime in the district. The rally started from DHQ Hospital and ended in front of press club. In the meantime DSP Sultan with police party reached and held negotiations with PMA leaders. He explained strenuous efforts were being made to trace out the culprits. He said investigating team had found some leads and hopefully the accused would be arrested soon. On his assurance the rally was called off.
However District President PMA gave deadline of three days to police for arresting the accused failing which the protest would spread throughout the country. All government and private hospitals and clinics remained closed on second day. Lawyers also observed strike to show solidarity with medics’ community.
On a question PMA president Dr Tariq Chadhar said medical facilities will restart functioning tomorrow and in case police did not arrest the accused within three days PMA meeting would be held to decide next course of action. It may be mentioned that on Saturday evening two unknown persons entered private clinic of Dr Nazir Gondal and attempted to kidnap him. On listening noise, Dr Shahid Nazir who is son of Dr Nazir and was attending patients in the adjacent room came out and resisted kidnappers to save his father. The intruders fired straight on him and leaving the crime weapon on the spot fled away. Dr Shahid was evacuated to DHQ Hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to wounds.
