Mandi Bahauddin(Sher Gondal) : The first “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists” was observed here In Mandi Bahauddin the other day.
During a seminar held at Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society district office, Advocate Rahila Chaudhry said during the last 10 years 700 journalist were killed in the world. Above 130 journalists were killed in Pakistan just for doing their job. There was constant threat to the life of journalists in our country. That is why Pakistan was declared most dangerous country for journalists.
She said to day when journalists were morning killing of journalists, Zaman Masud, a local journalist of Tank had been murdered when he was enroute from his home to Tank by some unknown culprits. Situation was horrifying and very dangerous for journalists’ community. She called upon media houses and government to take immediate measure to provide security to journalists.
Shahzad Chaudhry who is Editor of a local daily, criticized government for implicating journalists in false cases just to take revenge from them for raising their shortcomings. Quoting his own example, he said police arrested and tortured him for pointing out their unlawful actions.
He said he was admitted in local hospital where he was medically examined. According to medico legal report police caused 18 injuries on different parts of his body with burning cigarettes and hot iron rods. On refusal of police, he filed writ petition for registering case against the police accused that was accepted and the court ordered police to register case as prayed for in the petition. Police in compliance of the orders registered FIR and without investigation cancelled it. He then filed writ petition with Lahore High Court where the case was fixed for hearing. Now, he said police was pressurizing him for compromise.
