LGH starts treatment of Parkinson disease: Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood

Neuro Surgeon, Prof. Dr. Khalid MehmoodLahore: Programming of the patients who have received treatment of Parkinson disease from abroad has started at General Hospital and now they will not have to go to foreign countries after every three months and spend huge amounts.

Prominent Neuro Surgeon, Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood informed the journalists that operations of the patients suffering from Parkinson disease were conducted at General Hospital Lahore through deep brain stimulation a few months ago which proved successful. Operation charges of the patient Shakeel Ahmed of Gujranwala were borne by Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif. After this, further operations were carried out and the process is continuing. Nine more patients of Parkinson disease from Karachi, Islamabad and south Punjab are admitted in the hospital and their operations will be conducted before Eid-ul-Fitr. He said that an operation takes about 7 to 9 hours.

In reply to a question, Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood said that through DPS system, more operations for Parkinson disease are being conducted in Pakistan than Middle East and Saudi Arabia. He said that such patients who had undergone operations abroad had to go to foreign countries after three to four months for programming and a huge amount was spent. He said that after the programming work at General Hospital, such patients will not have to go abroad. He said that there are more than four lakh patients of Parkinson in Pakistan while their number at international level is more than six million. He said that persons above the age of 60 years usually face this problem.

Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood said that his knowledge and talent is trust of the nation and he is also training his juniors regarding treatment. He said that due to personal interest of Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, modern equipments are being installed at Punjab Institute of Neuro Sciences for providing better facilities to the patients.
