Bangladesh and England players rise in latest ODI rankings

Bangladesh cricket England cricketLahore: Shakib Al Hasan has regained the number one spot in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI All-rounders after inspiring Bangladesh to its first bi-lateral series victory over India on Wednesday.

Prolific 28-year-old Shakib scored 123 runs in the three-matches (52, 51 not out and 20) while also claiming three wickets for 99 runs (including a best performance of two for 33 in the first ODI in Mirpur) to cap a fine all-round display which also helped move Bangladesh to seventh position in the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings.

The recently completed series, which Bangladesh won 2-1, also saw the emergence of 19-year-old Mustafizur Rahman who, in his debut series, was the highest wicket-taker. He claimed 13 wickets for 150 and is set for a bright career after an impressive start.

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin has moved up two places into 10th position in the Reliance ICC Players Rankings for ODI Bowlers after claiming six wickets for 118 runs in the series. Ashwin is now just 12 points behind South Africa’s Morne Morkel, while Shakib has retained his eighth place ranking. Bangladesh medium pacer Taskin Ahmed also moved up eight places into 96th. India duo Akshar Patel and Suresh Raina are the other notable risers for India and have both gained five points each to move to 71st and 95th positions respectively.

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI Batsmen, India opener Shikhar Dhawan was the leading run-getter in the series and his 158 runs included scores of 30, 53 and 75, though Kane Williamson’s productive performances in the other series mean that Dhawan dropped a place to seventh, though he holds a sizable 43-point advantage over his captain MS Dhoni who is in eighth place after scoring 121 runs in the series, including a highest score of 69. Suresh Raina has also improved his ranking by two places to 18th. Bangladesh batsman Soumya Sarkar has vaulted 15 places to a career high 51st after scores of 54, 34 and 40 and other notable movers include Shakib (up two places to 31st) and Nasir Hossain (up three places to 38th).

England v New Zealand

Meanwhile, following England’s thrilling 3-2 series victory over New Zealand which concluded earlier this week, a number of players on either side have made significant gains.

In the Batting ranks, Williamson’s tally of 396 runs in the five matches (featuring scores of 93, 118, 90, 50 and 57) have seen the 24-year-old Tauranga man move up one place to sixth in the Batting Rankings and now lies just seven points behind Sri Lanka’s Tillikaratne Dilshan. Ross Taylor has moved up two places into ninth after scoring 375 runs (119 not out, 110, 42, 47 and 17).

Joe Root’s 274 runs, including two centuries and a fifty, has seen the in-form Yorkshire man move up five places to 11th, while his team-mate Jos Buttler has also moved up nine places to 17th after scoring 183 runs in four matches. However the stand-out performer with the bat for the hosts was inspirational captain Eoin Morgan whose tally of 322 runs in the series (including three half-centuries and a top score of 113 in the fourth ODI), has helped vault him 15 places to 30th.

Steven Finn’s eight wickets for 283 has boosted his position by two places to 13th in the Bowling rankings, however the biggest movers on either side were Black Caps pace bowler Matt Henry (up 22 places to 43rd) and England’s Ben Stokes (up 19 places to a career high 93rd).
