Lahore: At least 45 people were killed and several injured as armed terrorists opened fire on a bus of the Ismaili community in Safoora Chowrangi area of Karachi. Sixteen women were among the dead. The incident took place soon after the prime minister Nawaz Sharif commitment in Afghanistan to end terrorism & to eliminate the terrorist by joint efforts.
The killings make a hash of official claims, repeated endlessly, that terrorists’ back is broken.Another sad day in the history of the country.This despicable act of barbarity on the Ismaili community in Karachi.
The attackers managed to flee from the scene on three motorbikes. Fear and panic gripped the area after the incident.
Between 60 and 65 people were riding in the overloaded bus, which was traveling towards Aisha Manzil from Al-Azhar Garden,when it was attacked, police said. All the victims belonged to the minority community.
The authorities stated that “at least six gunmen attacked the bus in the Safoora Goth area of Karachi,”
“The gunmen first stopped the bus and then fired at it from outside,” said said a senior police official. “Then they entered inside the bus and open fire indiscriminately. After that they checked to see if anyone was left uninjured.” Rescue teams have shifted the victims to Memon Medical Institute and Hospital where an emergency has been imposed. A 48-year-old injured female eyewitness told police that the bus was surrounded and stopped at a deserted area by the terrorists, who entered it from the back door.She said that the attackers first killed the driver, while the passengers were told to kneel with their heads facing the ground. The attackers, one of whom she recalls as being clean-shaven, took two children aside before one of them ordered the others to “shoot them all”.
Police said the woman’s account was being treated as initial information, and that she may be questioned again by investigators.
At the Memon Hospital Institute, where most of the wounded were rushed, crying relatives formed a human chain outside the main building to keep onlookers away.
A sobbing middle-aged man said: “I have come to collect the body of my young son. He was a student preparing for his first year exams at college.”
The bus itself, which had been driven after the attack to the hospital, was blood-drenched and riddled with bullet holes. “The bus had a capacity of 52 passengers but it was overloaded and dozens of people were boarding it. Most of them were from (the) Ismaili community.
Senior police officials including IG Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali, Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo, SSP Malir and DIG East reached the attack site and investigations are being carried out.Police has also finalised the preliminary report of Karachi bus firing incident.
Taking notice of the incident, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah suspended the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Station House Officer (SHO) of the area.He said that the perpetrators of the bus attack will be brought to justice at all cost.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the incident and expressed grief over the loss of precious lives.He also directed the concerned authorities to submit a report.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan also expressed shock and grief over the killing of innocent people.
The federal minister Pervaiz Rasheed has said that the most peaceful community in Karachi was targeted.
