Lahore: Punjab University Department of Zoology’s research scholar Haji Muhammad has been awarded with gold medal for his best oral presentation of research paper entitled, “Skin Diseases in different Fishes of Indus River at Taunsa Barrage, District Muzaffar Garh” at 5th International Fisheries Symposium in which FAO Rome and NACA representatives were also present.
The paper presented in the symposium was on partial finding of research project supervised by Dr Zafar Iqbal of Zoology Department and funded by Punjab University.
According to findings, the skin diseases affecting the fishes in Indus River are due to water pollution, over harvesting due to unusual methods and shortage of water. Such conditions are ultimately leading to destruction of fish fauna which causes low production and loss to economy of the country.
The disease and health management areas of the riverine fishes need special and urgent attentions of the researchers and concerned authorities.
