Lahore: Interventional Radiology Unit of General Hospital, Lahore, has started Angioplasty and stenting of lower limbs to ensure flow of blood which will save patients of diabetes from amputation of their lower limbs as well as also help in the treatment of gangrene.
This was informed by Principal PGMI, LGH Prof. Anjam Habib Vohra. He informed that a team of doctors headed by Dr. Shahzad Karim Bhatti, Interventional Radiologist and Dr. Umair Rasheed is working on this project. Dr. Shahzad Karim Bhatti said that flow of blood especially the lower limbs of diabetes and hypertension patients become impeded due to which their feet and fingers become numb and have to be amputated due to gangrene. He said that a limb is amputated of a diabetes patient in the world after every 30 second and 24 percent diabetes patients have to undergo this operation. He said that diabetes patients should pay special attention to the care of their hands and feet. Dr. Shahzad Karim further said that blackening and numbness of lower limbs and toes is a signed that flow of blood is impeded.
Prof. Anjam Habib Vohra said that Interventional Radiology Ward of General Hospital is state-of-the-art department where modern machine has been installed for angiography of limbs. He said that a 6-member team of doctors headed by Dr. Shahzad Karim has performed angiography and stenting of two patients aged between 65 and 75 years who were suffering from ulcer of feet and their flow of blood has been normalized which will help in healing up their wounds and save them from amputation. The members of the team included Dr. Saima, Dr. Hameed, Dr. Liaqat and Dr. Abbas.
