Lahore: Veteran social activist Raja Jahangir Akhtar has said that Members of the National Assembly should fulfil their responsibility to get Article 161 of the Constitution amended to pave for construction of dams in Pakistan.
The amendment would help Punjab get royalty worth billions from Mangla Dam which could be used to uplift the underdeveloped area of Pothohar, he said.
In a statement issued from his hunger strike camp, the Raja Jahangir Akhtar said that he is looking for any personal benefit but just want to serve the poor people of Pothohar. He said that he is ready to end his protest as soon as the legislators present the amendment bill in the National Assembly. The amendment would divert profit of dam from the area or province where power house is located to the area or province holding water enabling Punjab to get profit of Mangla Dam.
Moreover, he added, it would help develop Gilgit-Baltistan and end opposition to Kalabagh dam. He said that members of the national assembly should look beyond providing some facilities to masses and seriously think about legislation.
