Lahore: Mughal Society of Pakistan on Thursday expressed grave concern over theft of artefacts from the tomb of chief justice of great Mughal Emperor Akbar-e-Azam.
Tomb robbing of the mausoleum of Qazi-ul-Quzat Sheikh Ghulam Nabi which is located in Gujranwala is a very serious offence which is result of apathy of Department, it said.
President of the Mughal Society Baig Raj said in a statement that the crime could not have been committed without the information from some of the black sheep working in Auqaf Department.
Refusal of police to lodge FIR clearly speaks of their intentions and that they want to protect the criminals destroying national heritage for personal gains.
He demanded immediate arrest of the criminals, recovery of artefacts and restoring tomb to its original shape with proper security arrangement to avoid similar incident in future.
Baig Raj asked Chairman Auqaf Siddique-ul-Farooq to take note of the incident, adding that that proper security arrangement can demotivate people from sacrilege of graves and tomb raiders from depriving country of valuable art pieces are worth millions of dollars.
Grave robbing causes great difficulty to the study of archaeology, art history, and history. Countless precious grave sites and tombs have been robbed before scholars were able to examine them destroying archaeological context, historical and anthropological information.
