Lahore: The extension project of Government College University, Lahore (GCU) Girls’ Hostel has been completed with a special grant by the Punjab government. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman Friday inaugurated the new storey of the GCU Girls’ Hostel, while Campus Engineer Lt Col(r) Bilal Ahmed, Director Research Prof Dr Muhammad Zakria Butt, Chief Librarian Abdul Waheed and heads of various academic departments were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof Rahman said that the number of students at GCU had been increased from 6,200 to 10,500 in the last three years due to which the demand for hostels had also increased. He said the new storey would help GCU in providing hostel facilities to the female students who came from far flung areas to peruse their studies at GCU.
The Vice Chancellor said Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, an eminent Old Ravian, had always taken keen interest in the development of their alma mater for which the Ravian community expressed gratitude to him.
Prof Rahman said GCU would give top priority to hostels at its new campus at Kala Shah Kaku. He also said that the restoration work was also underway at the GCU’s 145-year-old main building. He said that changes, happened against the original design, were being undone and the clock tower building was being restored to its original condition of 1870s. He said the building had been in a highly dilapidated condition since long and had required extensive repair and restoration work.
