Lahore: Principal Postgraduate Medical Institute and Lahore General Hospital Prof. Anjum Habib Vohra has said that brain tumor is completely curable disease and all facilities of neurosurgery are available in Pakistan. Early diagnosis can enhance the possibilities for complete recovery.
He expressed these views while addressing a press conference at PGMI on the eve of World Brain Tumor Day, here on Saturday.
He said that Institute of Neuro Sciences which is being set up at Lahore General Hospital on the directions of Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, will provide all diagnostic, treatment and research facilities under one roof.
He said that Institute of Neuro Sciences will provide opportunities for the promotion of neurosurgery in Punjab as well as training and updating the knowledge of doctors. He said that Lahore General Hospital is playing a very important role in neurosurgery and the patients of head injuries and traffic accidents are brought to this hospital from all over the country.
He disclosed that the World Tumor Day is being observed from 2000 and the objective of observing this day is to highlight the importance and severity of the situation. Anjum Habib Vohra said that though the neurosurgeons are very scarce in Pakistan but all the tertiary hospitals in Punjab have treatment and diagnostic facilities of neuro diseases.
He said that surgery is the initial treatment of brain tumor but sometimes doctors could not bring out the whole tumor, therefore, radiation is required for further treatment. He said that both facilities are available in Pakistan.
He said that permanent headache nozia and vomiting are the early symptoms of brain tumor. He said that advancement in the health sector and latest research has improved the treatment of brain diseases and the majority of patients are recovered completely. He said that neurosurgeons are very rare and only seventeen full professors and two hundred neurosurgeons are available in the country of 19 crore population.
He urged upon the doctors to come forward and join the field of neurosurgery to overcome the shortage of neurosurgeons in Pakistan.
