NGOs are playing important role in promotion of non-formal literacy:President EFA

PU (19-5-14)Lahore: Education For All President and Advisor to Vice Chancellor Col (r) Ikram Ullah Khan presided over a meeting of EFA at Executive Club in which Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Culture Rana Muhammad Arshad, renowned educationist Begum Shaheen Attiuq ur Rehman, Lt Gen (r) Naseer Akhter, former minister Rana Ikram Rabbani, Chaudhry Ghulam Abbas, former DG Civil Aviation Authority Air Marshal (r) Anwar Mahmood Khan and representative of NGOs from various districts participated.

Addressing the meeting, Col Ikram Ullah Khan said that NGOs were playing important role in promotion of non-formal literacy and EFA would continue its struggle to promote education for achievement of goals of educational emergency in the province.

He said that with the collaboration of government, non-formal schools would remain open till 2019 and a model centre will be established in each Tehsil. He said that as many as 6607 adult literacy centres will be opened from which around 1 million uneducated adults would benefit.

He expressed thanks to Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Provincial Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan and Secretary Literacy Dr Pervaiz Ahmed for taking steps to promote education in province.

Rana Muhammad Arshad said that people would practically see steps taken by Punjab government to implement emergency in education sector. Mrs Shaheen Attique ur Rehman said NGOs should work together for promotion of education for development of country.

The speakers lauded the efforts of Col Ikram Ullah Khan for promotion of education in country.

Meanwhile,Punjab University Career Counseling & Placement Centre organized training workshops at Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAGS) and Institute of Business Administration (IBA) on “Personality Grooming” and “Explore your Talent” respectively.

Atif Mirza and Qasim Ali Shah were the resource persons for the workshops. Later, in his address Chairman CCPC Dr Abdul Qayyum Choudhry said that under the leadership of PU VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran and Director External Linkages Dr Maria Maldonado the department was organizing such training workshops for the professional training of students to provide them employment opportunities.

Punjab University Library in collaboration with Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) organized a seminar on “Environmental Radioactivity and Harmful of lionizing Radiations” at Library’s Jinnah Auditorium.

Chief Librarian Choudhary Muhammad Hanif, Deputy Chief Librarian Dr Muhammad Haroon Husmani, Sr. Scientific Officers Ms Huma Iqbal and Ms Amina Bakht, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

Resource persons Huma Iqbal and Amina Bakht in their presentations discussed the application of the ionizing radiations in everyday life, associated hazards, means of protection and the role of Regulatory Body in regulating nuclear and radiation facilities in Pakistan. In his address, Ch Muhammad Hanif emphasized on the regular campaign for the awareness of general public about this issue.
