GCU students get rescue training

GCU-Rescue PicLahore: The Disaster Risk Management Society of Government College University, Lahore in collaboration with Rescue 1122 has organised a two-day Basic Life Support & Rescue Training to teach the students techniques and methods of coping with disasters like fire, flood, earthquake etc.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman chaired the closing ceremony of the training which was also attended by Punjab Rescue Service 1122 Director General Dr Rizwan Naseer, GCU Dean Faculty of Sciences Prof Dr Islam Ullah Khan and Disaster Risk Management Society Adviser Dr Ali Iqtadar Mirza.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Rizwan Naseer said that most the accidents could be prevented by awareness, good management and supervision combined with effective training. “Rescue 1122 has rescued more than 25 million people keeping the response time of 7 minutes,” he added.

Vice Chancellor Prof Rahman said that the basic life support and rescue trainings should be compulsory for every student at the college and university levels, adding that it was also their religious obligation to help others. He said that in western countries, young people voluntarily took part in the rescue work. The Vice Chancellor appreciated the Rescue 1122 team members and asked them to impart rescue training to the students of all the educational institutes of Pakistan.

Earlier, Rescue 1122 officers Ruqia Bano Javed, Aamir Mushtaque, Rana Ehsan Ullah and Ansar Ali delivered lectures to the students and instructed them how to deal with the disastrous situation and rescue the victims on the spot. The team informed the students about the importance and purposes of fist aid and said it was the provision of initial care for an ill or injured person and usually performed by lay person until professional care arrives or definitive medical treatment could be accessed. “It is generally consists of a series of simple and in some cases, potentially life-saving techniques that an individual can be trained to perform with minimal equipment,” they added.

The Rescue 1122 team also delivered lectures on different topics including Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, how to control bleeding, fracture management, spinal injury management, patient assessment/physical examination and fire prevention & fire safety. The rescue team also hold practical and written test for the participants.
