Lahore: Punjab University Department of Urdu has celebrated 100th birthday of renowned poet of modern Urdu poem Majeed Amjad and organized a seminar on Sherani Hall of Oriental College, Old Campus, here on Thursday.
PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, internationally renowned scholar and writer Intizar Hussain, Prof Emeritus Prof Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakria, renowned poet Amjad Islam Amjad, Dean Faculty of Oriental Learning Dr Ismatullah Zahid, Chairman Department of Urdu Prof Dr Muhammad Kamran, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
Dr Mujahid Kamran said that Majeed Amjad’s poetry left in-depth effects on the hearts and only his fans could understand the feelings in his poetry. He lauded Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakria for his indepth research paper on Majeed Amjad. Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakria read research paper highlighting various aspects of life and features of the poetry of Majeed Amjad and said that Majeed Amjad was a kind human being sans arrogance. He said that his work was not appreciated in Karachi but in Punjab his poems were included in curriculum from intermediate to university level.
Intizar Hussain said that Majeed Amjad was the man like “Qalandar” and he was the fourth gem stone in our poetry.
Dr Ismatullah said that the oriental college was organizing literary activities continuously because of the support of the vice chancellor.
Several other scholars presented papers and read various poems from the poetry of Majeed Amjad. PU Department of Urdu will also organized Mushaira at Oriental College’s Sabzazar to pay tribute to Majeed Amjad on Friday (today) April 11 at 6:30pm in which renowned poets including Anwar Masood, Atta ul Haq Qasmi, Amjad Islam Amjad, Khurshid Rizvi, Khalid Sharif, Khalid Masood, Zahid Fakhri, Wasi Shah, Sofia Baidar, Hameeda Shaheen, Saima Kamran, Aslam Kolsri, Saeed ul Zafar Siddiqui and others will present poetry.
