Injustice may pave way for unexpected military intervention

Lahore: The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday said timely statement of Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif in the prevailing complex and challenging environment has boosted morale of Army. Confrontation between important institutions is detrimental for country and economy which has been stabilising after decades, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.Dr Murtaza Mughal

In a statement issued here today, he said that former President Musharraf must be tried for violating the constitution but justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that injustice may pave way for the possible intervention by the army, which would hurt the development of democracy and civilian rule in Pakistan. He demanded action against elements who have been defaming army and allied institutions in the backdrop of treason trial against the former president otherwise it would result in differences among important stakeholders.

Some of the politicians and so called intellectuals have been dancing on the tune of adversaries with an aim to destabilise Pakistan, he noted. A single man cannot do much, those politicians and bureaucrats who reaped benefits during Musharraf’s era should also be brought to justice to reduce impression of selective justice and discrimination. Blaming some politicians and media outlets for immaturity, he said that no one should be treated like a criminal before proven guilty in the court of law. Turkish model to deal with the former generals may not work in Pakistan while injustice could can hurt the sentiments of common troops, he observed.

Dr. Mughal said that armed forces are serious in negotiations with Taliban for the sake of peace while those raising concerns have influenced by a conspiracy.
