Lahore: An intense clash between students of Islami Jamiat Taliba and police was witnessed outside the Punjab University New Campus after what the IJT claims was a protest against the misuse of power by University administration and the police too.
Protesting students threw stones at the police and blocked the Canal Road which caused traffic jam for hours.
Police baton-charged students demanding release of fellow students here on Wednesday while taking several into custody.SSP Operations Rana Abdul Jabbar claimed that 13 students have been arrested while a FIR was lodged against 32
students.Mukharullah,Nazeer,Aslam, Sharaft
Ali,Umair,Haseebullah,Rizwan,Osama,Tanzeel,Mahraam,Ather Rasheed,Abu Bakar and Sakandar were among the arrested.
An official of the student body demanded immediate release of arrested students warning administration of the consequences in case students are not released.
Commuting citizens had to face hours-long traffic jam as a result.IJT activists also threw stones on police.
Police claimed stones thrown by students injured a number of policemen. Iqbal Town Superintendent of Police (SP)Syed Toseef Haider was also on the the spot. Traffic was jammed on roads adjoining the PU New Campus, especially Canal Bank Road which remained at halt for almost 8 hours. The traffic jam spilled over to roads going into Faisal Town, Garden Town, Muslim Town and Wahdat Road.
SSP Rana Abdul Jabbar have the opinion that IJT ‘students beaten up the security guards of the University,snatched wireless sets from them,injured many cops by throwing stones upon them and broke screens of so many vehicles.On his direction,SP Iqbal Town reached at the spot and tried to negotiate with the students but they refused to listen.He said police will maintain order and everyone have to respect the law.
