Lahore: Usman Rafique caused a major upset as he defeated Usman Ejaz on the second day of Hassan Tariq Rahim Masters Cup Tennis Tournament being played at the hard courts of the Lahore Gymkhana Club on Monday.
Usman Ejaz is the fifth member of the recently announced Pakistan Davis Cup team. Both the players were involved in long rallies from the baseline, with Usman Rafique over-coming Usman Ejaz by playing aggressive tennis. Usman Rafique broke Usman Ejaz’s fifth game of the first set and then held his own serve to lead 4-2. Usman Rafique then held his serve at 5-4 to win the set 6-4. In the second set too both the players kept playing from baseline and rarely attacked the net. Usman Rafique broke early to take lead and won the second set and match 6-4.
In the second men’s singles match of the day, Pakistan No.2 Yasir Khan made short work of Heera Ashiq as he won 6-2, 6-1. Yasir’s ground strokes were too much for Heera to handle as he took control of the match early on and never let Heera to take control of the match.
In the men’s doubles match, Usman Ejaz & Shahzad Khan beat Heera Ashiq & Ahmad Babar 6-1, 7-6 (5) while in other doubles match M. Abid Mushtaq & Usman Rafique beat Faizan Khurram & Khurram Nazir 6-2, 7-5.
In the Women’s singles matches, Khunsha Babar beat Mahin Aftab 6-4, 6-1. In the first set Mahin led Khunsha but she twisted her ankle although she continued to play but her movement was restricted. 12 year old Mahin put up a brave fight before eventually going down. In the other Women’s singles Alina Aftab, elder sister on Mahin Aftab rallied to defeat Mariam Mirza 6-2, 6-1. Alina too had hurt her knee while playing a back hand but like her sister showed courage and continued to play with a slight limp.
In the Boy’s Under-18 Saad Zafar beat Hamza Bin Asif 6-4, 7-6 (6), while Pakistan Boy’s Under-18 No. 1 Muhammad Mudasir defeated his younger brother Muhammad Muzamil 6-2, 6-3. Zaid Mujahid beat Hasnain Manzoor 6-4, 6-4 and Arham Atique Khan beat Abdal Haider 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2. Zaid and Hasnain played some exciting tennis and power ground strokes during the match.
In today’s matches, Aisam Qureshi will be action in the afternoon as he will partner Aqeel Khan to face Imran Ali Asghar & Imran Bhatti of Lahore Gymkhana in the men’s doubles and earlier Aqeel Khan will be in action in singles at Noon as he will face Faizan Khurram.
