Minister Education presenting shield to Australian High CommissionerLahore Gymkhana Cricket Club Veterans Team beat the Australian Federal Police Wing Cricket Team working at Australian High Commission, Islamabad in a charity match here at Lahore Gymkhana Cricket Club, Bagh-e-Jinnah Lahore. This match was played in recognition of the meritorious services of Shaheed DIG Police  Fayyaz Ahmed Sumbal who embraced martyrdom a day before Eid-ul-Fitr this year in Quetta in a terrorist attack on police lines.

Provincial Minister for Education and Sports Punjab Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan gave away winning trophy to the captain of Lahore Gymkhana Cricket Club Veterans Javed Zaman Khan and the runners up trophy to the captain of Australian diplomat Denny Caruana.

Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan H.E. Peter Heyward, Special Secretary to Chief Minister Punjab Abdullah Sumbal, Australian Team Manager Marzio Dare, Additional Inspector General Police Highway Patrol Sohail Khan and Additional IG Balochistan Muhammad Abid Qadri witnessed the match along with the family members of Shaheed Fayyaz Ahmed Sumbal and the cricket lovers from both Pakistan and Australia.

Kashf Fayyaz, eight years old daughter and six years old Sami Ahmed, the son of Shaheed Fayyaz Ahmed Sumbal  expressed their resolve to fight courageously for the survival of Pakistan and to ensure safety of the people of Pakistan in future like their brave father Shaheed Fayyaz Ahmed Sumbal, who laid down his life during performance of duty for his motherland.

The Minister Sports Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan in his address, paid homage to Shaheed Fayyaz Ahmed Sumbal and said all those who sacrificed their lives for integrity of Pakistan deserved recognition from people of Pakistan as well as from the international community as Pakistan was forced to play the role of front line state in so called war on terror 12 years ago and our nation had to suffer a lot. It is the need of time to portray the softer image of Pakistan in the comity of nations.

Friendly cricket matches between diplomats of various cricketing nations in Pakistan was what Pakistan needs like now, the Minister added.

Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan H.E. Peter Heyward endorsed the point of view of Rana Mashhood saying that love for cricket was the common value between the people of Australia and Pakistan and this sentiments should be exploited in a positive way to bring the people of both the countries closer to each other.

The match proceeds amounting Rs.6 lakh was donated to Balochistan Police Welfare Branch on this occasion. It was informed to the spectators of the match that the President of Pakistan has announced the award of “Hilal-e-Shujaat” to Shaheed Fayyaz Ahmed Sumbal, which will be conferred to the wife of the martyr on March 23, 2014.
