JI welcomes government’s belated decision to tackle the Karachi situation

Lahore:  Ameer, Jamaat e Islami, Pakistan, Syed Munawar Hasan, has welcomed the government’s belated decision to tackle the Karachi situation but expressed his doubts about its efficacy in the presence of No Go areas and large scale  political appointees in the police.

Talking to media men at Mansoora at the launching ceremony of Qayyum Nizami’s book titled “Moamalat e Rasool, on Wednesday, he said that several questions arose in the public mind about the proposed targeted action which remained unanswered so far.

Syed Munawar Hasan said that undoubtedly, the progress and prosperity of the country was closely linked wit the peace in Karachi, and until and unless, normalcy was restored in the port city, the economy of the country could not improve.

He said that thousands of political appointments were made in the Karachi police,  therefore, hoping for the desired results in the presence of these people was deceiving oneself. He expressed the hope that the provincial as well as the federal governments would give due attention to this point. He said when the Prime Minister was aware that workers of the Water Board had been performing police duties in police uniform, why was the government trying to befool the people.

He pointed out that the police officers who had participated in the 1992 army  action in Karachi had been killed one by one in target killing and the question arose whether the police and rangers would participate in the proposed action out of the fear of the target killers.

He stressed upon the government to tell the nation under whose government these officers were killed and about their murderers.

The JI Ameer said that the way the Supreme Court had exposed the security agencies and held them responsible in the missing persons issue, there were no two opinions that different government institutions and agencies in Karachi were involved in  different crimes including extortion and target killings. The agencies and other government officials, he said, were playing in the hands of the people in power. He said  during the previous government, the PPP, the MQM and the ANP had exposed the crimes of one  another but no body tried to apprehend the culprits.

Talking to the media, JI Secretary General,  Liaqat Baloch said that as long as the Sindh Governor was not changed, the situation in Karachi could not improve. Liaqat Baloch said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s seeking MQM’s support for the election of the President elect, Mamnoon Husain, had not been approved even by some PML(N)  leaders.
