Islamabad: Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said Wednesday that Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has received the Supreme Court Registrar’s letter in the NRO implementation case through the Attorney General.
Speaking to the media following the federal cabinet meeting, Kaira said the prime minister has sent the letter to the Law Ministry for consultation. In the letter the Registrar has sought information regarding implementation of the NRO.
According to Kaira, Law Minister Farooq Naek has recently been appointed and is not familiar with the background and details of the NRO case. “The Law Minister will provide a briefing to cabinet when he becomes familiar with the case following which a decision will be made.”
The Information Minister said that a special session of the cabinet can also be called to finalise the issue. The Law officer will inform the apex court on Thursday regarding what it would be doing.
The Prime Minister has directed the Law Minister to give a quick response in this connection. In reply to a question, Kaira said that the government had never said that it would not write the letter to Swiss authorities but rather under the constitution the letter could not be written.
A five member larger bench of the Supreme Court will resume hearing of the NRO case on July 12 which is the deadline for Prime Minister Ashraf to indicate whether he would ask Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Zardari.
