Protective bunds to be maintained for flood protection :Provincial Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation

Lahore:Provincial Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, Malik Ahmed Ali has said that Punjab government is spending more than Rs.16 crore for the construction of new protective bunds and repair and maintenance of the existing flood protection bunds in district Layyah. He said that Kukarwala Protective Bund has been completed at a cost of Rs.11 crore.

He expressed these views while presiding over a high level meeting after inspection of protective bund in Kukarwala, Layah City, today. DC Layyah Mushtaq Ahmed, MPA Ejaz Ahmed, XEN Canals Layyah, Taunsa Barrage Kot Addu, EDO Works, Incharge Rescue 1122 and officers of agriculture, health, education and other departments were present on the occasion. The Minister said that five protective bunds and six spurs have been constructed on a 58 miles long passage for the protection of district Layyah from flood. He directed all the departments to finalize measures in order to affectively cope with the possible flood in district Layyah so that an affective flood fighting plan could be evolved for the protection of life and property of the residents. The Minister directed to perform work round the clock for the necessary repair and supervision of all the bunds. He also reviewed the pace of progress on ongoing development projects.

Malik Ahmed Ali said that district Layyah faced the worst flood in 2010 and under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, the administrative machinery performed well during relief and rehabilitation process. He directed district administration to utilize all the resources for evolving affective flood fighting programme in the light of the past experiences.

On this occasion, DCO Layyah also gave a briefing to the Minister and informed that vaccination process is continuing for safeguarding the citizens from the epidemics. He said that pre-flood camps besides 20 relief camps have been setup while monitoring committees have been constituted for the rescue, relief and rehabilitation which will work under District Disaster Management.
