The devaluation of Pak Rupee made production of electricity through coal unviable : Mian Adrees

Lahore : Mian Muhammad Adrees, Former President FPCCI has drawn the attention of government that there is a serious distortion in the production of Electricity through imported coal.

During last 9 months, due to rise of C&F price of imported coal from USD 90/MT to USD 103/MT (14% increase) and the recent devaluation of Pak Rupee against US$ by more than 10% has made production of electricity through coal unviable and industry will have no option but to shift on National Grid again resulting into unbearable load on WAPDA.

He emphasized that under these circumstances, the Govt authorities should immediate withdraw the 5% import duty on coal and import of coal should be duty free so that the huge investment in the coal based power projects could be saved.

Otherwise, due to non viability of production of electricity through coal will have to be shut down for economic reasons. An urgent action should be initiated by the concerned government authorities in this regard immediately.
